Hospital Sitter Services in Knoxville & East Tennessee
A familiar conversation, a reassuring presence, someone to help call the nurse. Harmony at Home offers non-medical, one-on-one hospital sitter support, including overnight visits, so your loved one has company when you cannot be at the bedside.
Support at the bedside, including overnight
Hospital routines can feel unfamiliar, particularly after a sudden admission or during a long night. A private sitter spends dedicated time with your loved one while you return home, go to work, or take a break. We discuss the requested hours, caregiver availability, and hospital approval before confirming a visit. This service takes place during the hospital stay; it is different from help at home after discharge.
What a non-medical hospital sitter can do
The hospital determines which activities an outside caregiver may provide. Within those rules and the agreed care plan, support may include:
- Quiet companionship, conversation, reading, and reassurance during daytime or overnight hours.
- Helping your loved one reach the call button and contacting hospital staff when assistance is needed.
- Keeping approved personal belongings within reach and helping maintain a comfortable bedside routine.
- Offering familiar reminders and patient conversation when the environment feels confusing.
- Sharing non-clinical observations with the designated family contact, with the patient's consent.
- Simple comfort assistance only as permitted by staff; food, drinks, mobility, and personal care must follow hospital instructions.
Hospital staff remain responsible for medical care
Our sitter supplements hospital staff and does not replace a nurse, a hospital-assigned observer, or any required clinical staffing. We do not provide medical monitoring, interpret vital signs, administer medication, handle medical equipment, or make treatment decisions. A sitter cannot guarantee prevention of falls, wandering, or other safety events. Requests for clinical observation or hospital-required safety supervision must be addressed with the hospital team.
Arrange permission before the first shift
Ask the bedside nurse or hospital care coordinator whether a privately arranged non-medical sitter is allowed on the unit, including overnight. Visiting restrictions, isolation precautions, identification requirements, and room access may affect the plan. We need the hospital location, unit, requested schedule, family contact, and permitted tasks before arranging support. Admission changes, procedures, or unit transfers may require the plan to be reviewed.
Planning for discharge
A bedside sitter is not discharge clearance or a substitute for the hospital's discharge instructions. If help will be needed at home, tell us about the expected discharge date and everyday tasks your loved one may need support with. We can discuss a separate non-medical home care plan, subject to an assessment and caregiver availability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you provide an overnight hospital sitter?
We can discuss one-on-one overnight hospital sitter support. Visits depend on caregiver availability, the patient's needs, and the hospital's permission and unit rules. Call with the hospital location and requested hours; overnight coverage is not guaranteed until confirmed.
Is this the same as a hospital's medical or safety sitter?
No. Harmony at Home provides privately arranged, non-medical companionship. If the hospital requires a clinical observer or safety sitter, its team must determine and arrange that coverage. Our caregiver does not replace it.
Can a sitter help my loved one get out of bed or eat?
Only when the hospital permits the task and it is appropriate for our non-medical care plan. Hospital staff must direct restrictions involving mobility, swallowing, diet, and procedures. Our caregiver calls staff for assistance rather than independently making those decisions.
Do you monitor patients or give medications?
No. Medical monitoring, medication administration, treatment, and medical equipment are the hospital team's responsibility. Our sitter can contact staff when your loved one requests help or a concern is noticed.
How do we arrange a visit and learn the cost?
Call Harmony at Home or use our existing Get Started page. Share the hospital and unit, requested dates and hours, and the kind of companionship needed. We will discuss availability, approval requirements, and the cost for your proposed arrangement before you decide.
